Holiday Overview
The first successful ascent of Rakaposhi was done in 1958 by a British-Pakistani team led by Mike Banks and Tom Patey. There have since been eight reported ascents of this peak via three distinct routes.
The trip to conquer Rakaposhi usually begins in the village of Minapin, which is located in the Nagar Valley in Gilgit-Baltistan. Minapin can be reached by 4x4 cars or jeeps, either straight from Gilgit or from the nearby town of Hunza Valley. It's worth noting that the hike to Rakaposhi Base Camp, also known as 'Tagha Pharri,' has become a popular tourist attraction, particularly during the summer months. The best time to climb Rakaposhi is typically believed to be between May and August when weather conditions are more favourable and conducive to climbing endeavours.
The Karakoram Mountain Range, where Rakaposhi stands gloriously, is a massive range of mountains that stretches through Pakistan and China. It is famous for being home to some of the world's most famous peaks, including the daunting K2. This range is approximately 500 kilometres long and 200 kilometres wide, connecting at various points with the Hindukush and Himalaya Mountains. The Karakoram Range is home to a variety of valleys and villages, including Skardu, Hunza, and Gilgit, each with its own distinct cultural legacy and natural beauty.
The Rakaposhi Expedition exemplifies the fascination of the Karakoram Range and mountaineers' constant quest to conquer its spectacular peaks while immersing themselves in the region's cultural diversity. It is a tour that combines adventure with breathtaking scenery and a great appreciation for the challenges provided by this amazing mountain.
