Holiday Overview
Ultar Sar is remarkable among peaks in that it has two different summits, Ultar I, and Ultar II, each having its own vertical ascension. The mountain is located near the lovely village of Karimabad, just 10 kilometers northeast of Pakistan's scenic Hunza Valley. Ultar Sar is well-known in the region for its tremendous vertical ascent, which provides breathtaking views of the entire Hunza-Nagar Valley.
Ultar Sar is surrounded by outstanding neighbors, including the unique Lady Finger Peak, also known locally as "Bubli Mo Tin," and shares its domain with the extraordinary Shispare (7,611 meters) and the beautiful Hunza Peak (6,270 meters). The Hunza River flows nearby, and the mountain is surrounded by glaciers such as Attabad, Ultar, Hassan Abad, and Batura.
Ultar Sar rose to prominence in the 1990s when it was mistakenly declared the world's highest unclimbed independent peak, inspiring multiple attempts to reach its summit. Despite around 15 attempts between the 1980s and 1990s, no one was able to claim this difficult summit.
Akito Yamazaki and Kiyoshi Matsuoka, members of the Japanese Alpine Club, ascended the summit of Ultar Sar via Bathbakor BaseCamp in 1996, completing the story of triumph. This monumental accomplishment began a new chapter in the mountain's history.
Ultar Sar Base Camp has become a famous trekking and hiking location and has seen an increase in tourism in recent years, with visitors flocking to the Hunza and Nagar Valley region.
The ascent of Ultar Sar is not for the faint of heart. This technically difficult summit has overhanging boulders, dangerous crevasses, sharp ridges, and unpredictable weather. It is a challenge for experienced and talented mountaineers with extensive knowledge of their art.
Avalanches are also common on the mountain, and the dangers were cruelly highlighted in July 2018 when an avalanche struck three international mountaineers stuck at 19,000 feet on Ultar Peak.
A daring rescue attempt organized by Pakistan Army Aviation resulted in the safe extraction of two mountaineers, however, the third died as a result of the avalanche's harsh conditions.
When you embark on the Ultar Sar Expedition, you will put your skills to the test against one of the region's most technically challenging and awe-inspiring peaks, located within the stunning landscapes of the Karakoram, where risk and danger loom big, but the exhilaration of the climb remains unrivaled.
