Holiday Overview
Chogolisa manifests itself in numerous great peaks, the biggest of which, Chogolisa-I, adorns the southwest face and rises 7,665 meters (25,147 ft) into the heavens. The second-highest peak on the northeastern side, towering at 7,654 meters, is popularly known as Bride Peak, a term granted by intrepid explorer Martin Conway during his 1892 expedition.
The story of human triumph on Chogolisa began in earnest in 1975 when an Austrian expedition led by Eduard Koblmuller successfully ascended Chogolisa's southwest summit (Chogolisa-I). On August 2, 1975, climbers Gustav Ammerer and Fred Pressl etched their names into climbing history by achieving the summit. During the treacherous ascent, the team's leader, Eduard Koblmuller, was killed when he plummeted through a cornice. However, the team's quick actions and well-practiced use of ropes guaranteed his safe rescue.
Chogolisa-II fell to the tenacious spirit of Japanese climbers led by T. Kawabara from Kyoto University in 1958. Mountaineers M. Fujihira and K. Hirai made history by becoming the first to reach the summit of Chogolisa-II during this expedition.
