On June 13, 1983, an intrepid expedition headed by the legendary Doug Scott, together with seasoned climbers Greg Child and Peter Thexton, reached the top of Lobsang Spire, marking a watershed point in mountaineering history. Their incredible feat was accomplished through the hard South Pillar route, and they stuck to the difficult alpine style of climbing, which emphasizes self-reliance and relies less on fixed ropes and technical equipment.
The unique application of big wall aid climbing techniques, particularly the unprecedented use of portaledges, distinguishes this expedition as a trailblazing endeavor. Portaledges are suspended platforms that let climbers rest and even sleep on vertical or near-vertical rock faces, allowing them to stay on the mountain for longer periods of time throughout the ascent. It is worth mentioning that a previous effort on Lobsang Spire's difficult West ridge by other expedition members Alan Rouse and Andy Parkin failed near the summit.
